New Chairman of KIMAB

The Kirklees Imams & Mosques Advisory Board (KIMAB) is the representative body and voice of all Muslim denominations that exist in the 54 Mosques in Kirklees. It is a community-led independent body set up in October 2010 to act as the body for Imams & Mosques across Kirklees. The Kirklees Imams and Mosques Advisory Board initiated Imran Sarwar as the new Chairman at it's at the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 5th February 2012 held at the Deighton Centre, Huddersfield.

Imran Sarwar said: "I am honoured to have been initiated as Chairman for 2012-2013. I would like to pay tribute to Maulana Mohammed Amin Pandor who in his year as chair worked extremely hard to drive forward key achievements. I am grateful to him and all those who worked hard to make happen initiatives such as the Youth and Mosques Engagement Toolkit; Young People's Leadership Programme; and greater dialogue to help build good community relations".

"My job is to build on those successes. I want greater engagement to bring all communities together to help eliminate anti-Muslim hatred and hatred of all kind to help build good community relations for all. I want to work to ensure that young people play their part in making our society safer and cleaner by encouraging Mosques to play their role. I want to encourage Imams and Mosques in Kirklees to become role models by facilitating for example, cancer support groups and providing Soup Kitchens for the homeless in our society. Times are hard and it is the duty of all to play their part, however, big or small to help those vulnerable in our society irrespective of their faith or race", he said.

Imran Sarwar has been involved in community development work at local and national levels for over 10 years. Locally, he is the co-founder of the Huddersfield-based Hanfia Mosque and Educational Institute, which was one of the 7 approved Interfaith Centres in Kirklees; Cluster Coordinator with the British Council’s International School twinning project and Chair of Governors at a local school.

He has led on Home Office funded community cohesion projects which are recognised by local authorities as models of good practice and is currently working closely with the Senior Management Team and the Community Cohesion Working Group at a Secondary School to drive forward the community cohesion agenda in North Kirklees. He leads on British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme on behalf of a cluster of Dewsbury schools linking with numerous schools in the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Balochistan. He is also project manager for Huddersfield’s Muslim community radio station, leading a group of 15 presenters and also has his own talk show, live call and debate programme broadcasting every evening on 87.9FM.

Nationally, he is the National Convenor of the British Muslim Forum (BMF). His responsibilities include driving forward the BMF into a truly representative, effective and powerful body that works on addressing the needs of our communities, Mosques and Islamic centres throughout the UK. He is also an appointed Advisor to the Board of the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB) which is the main body for religious institutions that serve the UK’s two-million Muslims and represents their interests at governmental, non-governmental, national and international levels. Imran is regularly consulted by senior officials, key bodies and the media.

Imran studied Computing and Business at the University of Huddersfield. He has studied through various Islamic Institutions. He is married with 2 children and lives in Huddersfield.
